Haiku for Dummies

I have been seriously slacking on my poetry game. Besides the fact that I haven't really written in a month, I feel like my style has gotten more than a little stale. This month, I'm going to challenge myself by trying a few different poetic techniques. First haiku, then tankas :) Haven't written these since elementary school, at least, so I decided to google "haiku's for dummies"...and look what I found!!

From Dummies.com

Traditional Forms of Poetry: Tankas and Haiku
The Japanese tanka is a verse form from classical Japanese poetry. Even older than its better-known poetic cousin the haiku, the tanka is a quiet, meditative form that focuses on the natural world and the poet's emotions. A tanka is essentially a haiku (three lines consisting of 5, 7, and 5 syllables each), except it has two additional lines of 7 syllables each.

Traditionally, the tanka begins with an observation of a natural scene:

Invisible hands
caress my face; have I walked
through a spider's web
woven this morning to catch
flies writhing with my surprise

Many poets find that the tanka falls naturally into a haiku followed by a couplet. The haiku tends to focus more on observation, the couplet on reflection. But you don't have to observe this movement in your own writing. The tanka is a syllabic form, so just follow these simple rules:

•Avoid end-rhyming the lines.

•Vary the rhythms from line to line.

•Use enjambment to keep sentences and clauses twisting around the ends of the lines.

•Avoid ending too many lines in a row with a one-syllable word.

Hard Working Words

Evey year, hundreds of words are dropped from the English language.

Old words. Wise words. Hard working words. Words that once led meaningful lives but now lie unused, unloved, and unwanted.

Today, 90% of everything we write is communicated by only 7,000 words

you can change that. help save the words.

That is the central message of Oxford Dictionary's Save The Words site. It's a very tongue in cheek spin on the ever-popular "word a day" trend and I love it!! The words literally call out to you. Beg for you to adopt them. lol. I chose "xenization"...something that i hope to experience more of in the coming years. Check it out for yourself. Thanks baby bro for getting me hip to this:-)

Why are words important?

"Words are the cornerstone of language. The more words we have, the richer our vocabulary. Words allow us to communicate precisely. Without the right words to describe something, well...we'd be speechless.

Ni$$a Moments are Unpredictable...

We all have to confront and accept our inner forces...but sometimes, like in Daniel Beatty's Duality Duel, those inner forces confront us. Yup. His inner angry black man is straight up ready to kick his butt. Think Boondocks "Ni$$a moment." lol

This is a funny piece, but has a deep message nestled under all of that hilarity. Listen UP!

I Like You Like Frat Boys and Pirates Like Booty!!

You know I couldn't go more than a few days without a love poem:-)

Mike McGee's Like is another one of those oldie but goodies that really embody the slam movement. Engaging, well-delivered and, with the exception of the Muppets fisting line, very thoughtful. Yeah. He actually said "Like Muppets like fisting." LOL. That line still makes me blush, even after hearing it so many times. Good stuff, though. An all around fabulous piece.

For you know who:-)

"I like you a whole bunch of a lot.
you're a pocket full of awesome.
I like you similar to the way that frat boys and pirates like booty."

::Hilarity::

Feeling Sick and Tired

In honor of swine flu season, I'm posting Shihan's "Sick and Tired." We all need a comedic rant poem every once in a while, especially when the cold and flu ickies are going around. This poem made me lol...like...out loud...like for real:-) Loves it!!

The great lines are endless, but I've included a few of my absolute favs below.

I wanna smack people who don't even realize that Egypt is in Africa.
I'm tired of J-Lo having white parents in every movie she's in.
I'm sick of black features being attributed to everyone else except blacks, like having big lips is cool, but only after Angelina Joli had them.
I'm sick of Master P being allowed to speak on behalf of hip hip, when he represents nothing but everything wrong with it.
I'm sick of apathy and American Idol and the whole Survivor phenomenon.
I'm tired of poets doing poems for pu$$y.
I'm sick of Cuba Gooding crying in every movie he's in.

So much truth wrapped in so much funny. Enjoy the vid, good people.

America - This is Why You're Fat

KFC "Double Down" Sandwich Replaces Bread With Fried Chicken

KFC (AKA the reason why we're fat) is test marketing a new sandwich that has two pieces of fried chicken (instead of buns), and includes bacon, two kinds of cheeses and "special sauce." I love my fried chicken, but this is redic! I must admit, though...I am intrigued.

For all you fat kids in Rhode Island and Nebraska, let me know how

"Love Song For Kelis" By Michael Cirelli

Is Michael Cirelli the reason for the Kelis/ Nas break-up? Is he the baby daddy? Hmmm...

"I can see how some might think that your voice
is a milky cherry drowning on the bottom of a chocolate shake
or that holding your cd
next to my face
in the mirror
is the picture of a perfect couple..."

Great piece. Very funny:-)

All-Black Italian Vogue Returns — With Barbie

Loves it!! I was raised on Black Barbies and, in my all white neighborhood, it was the closest I ever came to seeing beautiful black women highlighted in pop culture. This tiny piece of plastic brown hottness showed me that pretty comes in many colors.

I'll put my inner feminist aside for the day and say - "bravo Barbie"

Check out the link for more on the feature and the history of the magnificent Black Barbie!

Just For Fun : WJW Fox 8 Cleveland does a ridiculous story on a bear in a lady's backyard

WJW says "A Woodmere resident has a close encounter with a black bear, it's in the backyard!" This reporter takes a legitimate story and turns it into a farce. He makes a cardboard cutout and says "this might have been what it looked like, if it wasn't a cutout..."

Just For Fun: Michelle, As Well

This love poem to Michelle Obama's wardrobe brings a smile to my face every time...:-)

"I write this poem on matters slight
By which I mean, Inaugural Night.

My shallow values hence exposed,
But someone’s got to mention clothes.

I’ll take you back as I digress
To Iowa and that black dress.

A silver belt around her waist
Opponent’s pantsuits in disgrace.

I viewed her garb and then I knew
She won’t wear suits in royal blue.

Man-tailored jackets grow on trees,
And no more rhinestone flag pins, please.

She won’t-nor will her dazzling girls-
Be seen in Barbara’s two-strand pearls."

Just For Fun: Last Day of the Facebook Fast!

I am quite happy to know that others are as addicted to Facebook as me and, as such, decided it was worthy of giving up for Lent.

To commemorate my last day sans FB, meet Kevin Shine A 39 year old firefighter who also gave it up...funny stuff.

Mr. Shine sounds a bit bewildered as he says this, as though he can't quite believe he's in this fix. Social networking sites such as Facebook and MySpace are far more popular among teens and college students. Nearly half of all 18-to-24 year olds visit such sites at least daily, compared to just 13% of Internet users overall, according to the Pew Research Center.

But a significant population of adults has also been hooked. They start by looking up old friends or flames. They scroll through co-workers' online photo albums. They post random tidbits about their days. Mr. Shine recently found himself telling all 157 of his online "friends" about the vomit a stray dog left on his porch

ps...when did old people take over FB? Remember when you had to be in college? Not hating...just wondering:-)

Just for Fun: Mow The Lawn Too Racy?

This would fall under the TMI category, but I guess its as clean as you can really make an ad about shaving "the down there." No further comment...
